How to Grow Wax Plants

Wax is a hard cuticle and protects the plants from the outside environment. Wax makes the plant strong and resilient to water loss and air circulation. They don’t like to be in dark places or places with low air circulation.

Here are the steps to help you grow a successful wax plant.

1. Watering your plants

Water the plant two times a week. Water in the morning and again in the evening, when the sun goes down. Also make sure to water a bit before the plants’ roots start to dry out.

2. Light

Wax plants are a bit tricky when it comes to the light. They prefer medium to bright light, but not too much because they don’t like extreme heat.

The ideal room temperature for wax plants is around 60-70 degrees Fahrenheit. Try to keep the plants where it gets a steady, indirect light. Direct sunlight can burn the wax leaves.

3. Fertilizer

Wax plants need a bit more than usual fertilizer.

You should fertilize your plants with a good combination of peat and fertilizers.

Also, it is important to feed your plants every two weeks.

4. Care and Hygiene

Wax plants prefer clean, fresh water and a clean pot. So make sure you don’t allow the soil to dry out and that you keep the soil moist at all times.

Your wax plant is a bit like a human. It needs a little care, just like us. For example, it will have a tendency to get dirty. That’s why it is important that you clean your pots and the soil once in a while. Wash the dirt off with water and use a cleaning solution if necessary.

5. Dampen the soil

Damp soil is essential for a plant. Damp soil is best for growing wax.

This includes using an absorbent material to keep the roots of your plant from becoming dehydrated and growing hard.

6. Remove excess leaves

You can keep on getting fresh and healthy wax leaves. But if they start to dry up or yellow, it’s time to cut off that growing tip.

Cut them off and then you can plant them in a fresh pot.

7. Transplant

You can either give your plants a big transplant or do a small one. For a big transplant, use the rootball method. Take a handful of fresh soil and use a knife to divide it into a single piece.

This will keep the root ball intact.

Wax plants have a tendency to get root rot. For this reason, you should do a small transplant every few months. This means taking off any dry and withered leaves from your wax plant and replanting them.

8. Watering

Don’t over water your wax plant. The best thing you can do for your plant is to water it when it needs it, and then you can let it dry out.

If you want to water your wax plant, start by checking the bottom of the plant with your fingers or with a special watering can. Check for any dirt or roots. If you find dirt or roots, then wait until they dry out a little. This way you will not harm your plants.

Wax plants prefer a bright and direct sunlight. If you have a good light, your plant will look good.

9. Fertilizer

It’s best to fertilize your wax plants in the beginning, but you can do this at any time. Make sure you only fertilize your wax plants once a week, and if you don’t want to use manure or fertilizer, you can use regular soil.

10. Cleaning

If you don’t want to clean your wax plant, just make sure you brush off the leaves every once in a while. It’s a good idea to do this every time you water your plant, and you should do this at least three times a week.
